#4 Daughter reminded me the other day of a time back when Mom was active. It was winter and we were outside in the snow. Mom and Sara may have been sledding, I don’t remember.
We were talking about how pretty the snow was, with the sun sparkling off it.
Sara said, “It doesn’t even look real! It looks like anime (ˈa-nə-ˌmā ) snow.”
To which I, clueless dunderhead that I am, replied:
“Who’s Anna Mae Snow?”
/sigh/

February 4, 2021 at 1:53amI get it: plain white snow has no magic; anime snow sparkles – with magic.

February 4, 2021 at 1:56amJust for fun: we watched Giri/Haji, and the beginning credits were pages from a graphic novel. Husband had never heard of them, and how important they are in Japan, so I was able to explain that the Japanese are very literate, and a big part of it IS these novels, with their careful graphics which carry a lot of the story. ‘Comics for grownups’ is not a way to explain them. Just as anime is not cartoon shows for teens.

February 4, 2021 at 8:30amTotally correct. The Studio Ghibli anime is often suitable for young people and even for children. They need to be discussed, though, because they also address deep thoughts and feelings.

February 4, 2021 at 11:48amI can only imagine how one gets to be literate in the pictorial languages. I wonder what all that capacity is NOT doing in MY brain.
