Oldies But Goodies #FridaysForFuture #ClimateStrikeOnline

Scientific American published these 10 Solutions For Climate Change back in 2007, but they’re still relevant today. As the article’s author, David Biello, says, “Some you may already be doing or absolutely abhor. But implementing just a few of them could make a difference.”

I particularly like the one that includes turning off the lights when you leave a room. My late husband was a bear about that, and we all learned that thrifty and responsible habit through his tireless efforts.

Our vegan daughter would probably most like the “go vegetarian” solution, since gassy cows and the carbon impact of raising feed and transporting meat contribute so much to the problem.

The science fiction fan in me likes the idea (theoretically) of geoengineering:

Climate change represents humanity’s first planetwide experiment. But, if all else fails, it may not be the last. So-called geoengineering, radical interventions to either block sunlight or reduce greenhouse gases, is a potential last resort for addressing the challenge of climate change.

I say “theoretically”, because any of these radical interventions could have unforeseen unintended consequences, but I like the notion of terraforming Earth, because geek.

Meanwhile, we can each do our little bit.

Work in progress.

A WRITING PROMPT FROM ME TO YOU: Write about turning off lights.

For the cow and gassy cow part, I recommend my friend Jim Webster’s blog – he has been an English farmer his whole life, and he isn’t happy with the way statistics and data are misused. He also writes with great humor about his work, kind of like James Herriot – from the other side.

Sounds good! Of course, I understand there’s a world of difference between farm-raised cattle and factory-raised cattle.

Yes. ๐Ÿ™‚ Another geek here. Sadly our record isn’t very reassuring. Here in Australia we tried to get rid of the [imported] bunnies with foxes. Yeah, right. Then we tried to get rid of something else by importing cane toads. Major disaster. And those are just the ones I know of here in Oz. Maybe we should do a Kim Stanley Robinson and terraform Mars first. If we get that right…;)

OMG, I love Kim Stanley Robinson SO HARD!!! Wasn’t that trilogy GREAT!? Did you read THE MARTIANS, a prequel where they train for the Mars expedition by living in Antarctica? Who was your favorite character? I know who mine was!

Yes and no. ๐Ÿ™‚ I read the trilogy and I read something about corporations and how bad they were. Sorry, memory like a sieve. But I didn’t read that prequel. I’ll check it out on Amazon.
I honestly can’t remember individual characters. I know that sounds awful but what I remember is the anti-ageing and the politics.
