How To Fight #1LinerWeds

As agreeable as my grandfather was, it was possible to disagree with him. I don’t know what he would have said or done if a disagreement got genuinely unpleasant, but I do know what would happen if he was tired of it.

He would say, “You want to fight me, buddy?”

If the other person said, “Yeah!”, Grandpa would point to the biggest person around and say,

That’s me buddy.

I don’t think he ever got into a fight. No, I tell a lie. A guy in high school wanted to fight him. Grandpa just dodged or let the guy punch him until a teacher came to “break it up”. The other guy got in trouble, and Grandpa got a reputation of being too tough to have to fight.

I didn’t know that until I wrote a short story about a kid who handled a bully like that, and Grandpa told me his story. Cool!

Yep, it’s all these short, quick anecdotes that make great scenes in books.

I’ve used more than one family story. 🙂 I take it you have, too.
