Apologies in Advance #1LinerWeds

I’ve shared a lot of my mother’s jokes and my grandfather’s jokes, but I don’t think I’ve ever shared any of my grandmother’s jokes. This is my mother’s stepmother, who married my grandfather when I was four.

She liked what she called “cute” jokes, by which she meant … well, here’s one:

A young man was driving his horse and buggy along a back road when he overtook a young woman dressed elegantly and wearing a hat with a very broad brim. He offered her a ride and she accepted.

Evening closed in, and they stopped at an inn for the night. Unfortunately, there was only one room and only one bed. The landlord assured them that the bed was very wide, and that he could offer them a bolster to put between them. (For those who don’t know, a bolster is a long pillow.) The young man assured the young lady that he was a perfect gentleman and she agreed to the arrangement.

The next day, they resumed their journey. The wind picked up and blew her wide-brimmed hat over the fence into a pasture.

The young man stopped the buggy and the young woman started to get out.

“Stay,” he said. “I’ll get it.”

To which she replied:

If you can’t climb over a bolster, I know you can’t climb over that fence.

That’s my sweet little gray-headed grandma for you.
