No X-Rated, Please #1LinerWeds

Per Bastet Publications specifies that we don’t publish erotica, but that doesn’t mean our authors have to apologize for having the occasional sex scene, as long as it’s respectful of the participants and not so explicit it could double as a how-to manual.

Personally, I could do without sex scenes in books, movies, TV shows, or casual conversation. My attitude is this:

I’m in favor of sex, I just don’t want to be there when it happens to other people.

A WRITING PROMPT FROM ME TO YOU: Write a sex scene with no mention of the specifics.

I like this. What bothers me are the sex scenes that are thrown in because (it seems) the author felt the need to have a sex scene. They read like, “here we are, walking down the street and, oh there’s two people having sex. Now let’s have lunch.”

LOL! Gratuitous sex and gratuitous violence each are a kind of pornography, not sex and violence per se. Although I always prefer to draw a curtain before things get too explicit.

If you don’t understand the mechanics, you will not learn them from me! You are too innocent.

If you do, you don’t need me – your own mind will fill in the blanks, and I would never interfere with that in a reader.

I call it PG-13 – and stop when I’ve written what applies directly to the plot. I assume competent readers.

Apparently not everyone does. Oh, well.

Well, some readers DO like to be there for every detail. Chacun a son gout. Or, as my mother used to say, “Everyone to his own taste,” said the old lady as she kissed the cow.

My idea of a good sex scene is a slow build-up and then they head for the bedroom or wherever after the author lays out the scene. Let the reader’s imagination take it from there.

Have you seen Henry, Sweet Henry, an old Broadway musical based on The World of Henry Orient? There’s a song in there where two girls are lamenting a movie where, just when they were about to learn something, the camera cut to two bullfrogs in a pond. Now, every time a scene gets got and heavy, I’m like, Bring on the bullfrogs!
