First, people yesterday asked about the Christmas pickle, so here you go. This was posted on a website called whychristmas.com, which I totally would have recommended yesterday, if I had found it in time. SO COOL!
Anyway:
In the 1880s Woolworth stores started selling glass ornaments imported from Germany and some were in the shape of various fruit and vegetables. It seems that pickles must have been among the selection!
Around the same time it was claimed that the Christmas Pickle was a very old German tradition and that the pickle was the last ornament hung on the Christmas tree and then the first child to find the pickle got an extra present.
However, the claim that it’s an old German tradition seems to be a total myth!
…So it’s most likely that an ornament salesmen, with a lot of spare pickles to sell, invented the legend of the Christmas Pickle!

I don’t even remember what-all is in this. You know how I do.
I know it has chopped bacon; leftover corn, carrots, and potatoes; and some kind of leftover meat. Probably chicken, but who knows? Maybe the tag end of a pork chop?

December 22, 2021 at 8:49amI love soup! I’ve never heard of a Christmas Pickle!! I was thinking of writing a friend of mine who is German a quick email to ask him if grew up with that tradition, but further reading shared it’s probably not true, so I won’t! 🤣
I’ll probably be making some Minestrone soup to go with our post Christmas meal. I throw in a lot this and that too! 😀

December 22, 2021 at 9:03amThat’s a wee bit too bland for me! 😀🥣 My two favorite soup recipes came out of magazines…it’s been so long ago I can’t remember which one(s). I make these two soups the most. Chicken Noodle, and Minestrone. I’ve tweaked the recipes a bit to our tastes, but they’re wonderful as written.

December 22, 2021 at 9:35amIt’s too bland for me, too, but could eat it every day. Sara and I love a tortellini and pesto soup we found in some cookbook somewhere. One of the few actual “Soups” I make. Of course, I make it to suit us and whatever is in the fridge.
