One of my favorite poets is Robert Francis. He was a contemporary of Robert Frost, who sucked all the oxygen out of the room for most other poets of his time. A writing teacher went outside the anthologies to introduce us to Francis, and I’ll be forever grateful. Here’s one of my favorites of his:

Cypresses
by Robert Francis

At noon they talk of evening and at evening
Of night, but what they say at night
Is a dark secret.

Somebody long ago called them the Trees
Of Death and they have never forgotten.
The name enchants them.

Always an attitude of solitude
To point the paradox of standing
Alone together.

How many years they have been teaching birds
In little schools, by little skills,
How to be shadows.

So, in honor of that poem, here are my nails for this week:

The base color is a metallic green. The leaves in the background are orange. The trees are a very dark brown called Acorn.

About

I was born in Louisville, Kentucky, but now live in the woods in southern Indiana. Though I only write fiction, I love to read non-fiction. The more I learn about this world, the more fantastic I see it is.

The poem is wonderful. And your nails are fabulous. A work of art. Can’t like either but it seems to be a WordPress glitch.

I changed a setting, so I’m hoping the Like button loads now. Please let me know. Robert Francis is often called the best little-known poet of his generation. I’ll share another of his sometime.
