Food Tuesday: Beloved Recipe

#FoodTuesday #writingprompt

After my grandma had a heart attack, lo, these many years ago, my grandfather took over the shopping and cooking and he didn’t stop until his age forbade his doing first one and then the other. This is one of his recipes.

Raisin Sauce for Ham

  • 1/2 cup raisins & 1 cup water
  • 3/4 cups sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 Tablespoon butter or margarine *
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice

Simmer raisins in boiling water until tender.

Add sugar and cornstarch, stirring constantly for 10 minutes.

Remove from heat.

Add butter or margarine and lemon juice.

Serve over ham.

* Instead, I melted vegan margarine (because I like it) in the pan first and fried the ham. I got ham steaks, which is what Grandpa always used. Ham steaks are slices of ham about 3/4 (2cm) of an inch thick. I took the ham out when it started to color up and followed the recipe without adding more margarine.

My raisins were multicolored. I served it with mashed sweet potatoes dressed with salt, pepper, and butter; and slaw mix dressed with Ranch dressing instead f mayonnaise.

Most satisfying, and Sara and I enjoyed remembering Grandpa.

What a great recipe, and you have the original too. You should turn them into a book so they never get lost.

What a delicious meal, Marian. Reading the recipe and seeing the plating photo I could practically taste it. I love your photo of the well-loved, stained recipe sheet. It makes me imagine good memories. Have a sparkling New Year. Hugs.
