I watched a mostly Asian-cast rom-com (because I apparently watch so many K-dramas, Netflix thinks I’m Asian, or at least Asian-adjacent): Always Be My Maybe. It had Randall Park as the male romantic lead, and I’ve always liked him in the Marvel movies. I think I may watch it again, because I’m not sure he has the romantic lead energy. Maybe it was because there wasn’t really a BOOM now we’re in love moment.
I liked it anyway, for various reasons. One is that, while most of the cast is Asian, it made it so so so very clear that “Asian” isn’t monolithic. There are Vietnamese, Korean, and Chinese (at least), and they all eat differently, cook differently, and draw from different cultural wells. Also, James Saito was in it, and I would have been happy having him play the romantic lead. I love James Saito. He’s Bud Blossom in my head.
It was also a hoot seeing Keanu Reeves play a pompous douchebag version of himself.
This past week, the sky has been SO BLUE and the only leaves that aren’t rusty are brilliant yellow, so my nails this week are blue and gold. My bird fingers are blue gradient, my accent nails are blue gradient stamped with gold leaf veins, my pointer fingers are darker blue with gold crackle over it, and my thumbs and pinkies are gold with blue leaf veins.
