On Paying Attention

A couple of years ago, I took this picture of a building near my church. I loved the shot, and was very pleased with the picture. I like the colors, the lines, the shadows.

Look!
Look!

Then, after looking at it a long time, I particularly liked the blurt of white in the center of the top of the chimney. It’s so random and so out-of-place, but it just made the picture for me. It wouldn’t have been as good, if that blot hadn’t been there.

Look closer!
Look closer!

Do you see it yet? The true crown of the picture. I didn’t see it when I snapped the shot, but this is the heart of the scene.

Ta da!
Ta da!

What a happy happenstance!

I’m posting at Fatal Foodies today about an author I think I want to start stalking — I mean reading.

A WRITING PROMPT FOR YOU: Pay very close attention to an ordinary scene.

I was born in Louisville, Kentucky, but now live in the woods in southern Indiana. Though I only write fiction, I love to read non-fiction. The more I learn about this world, the more fantastic I see it is.

Great photo! Is the tiny white thing a bird that just happened at the right time?
