#Caturday – Surrealism, Thy Name Is Felix

If you don’t know this guy, you should. I grew up watching Felix The Cat (the wonderful, wonderful cat), which may go a long way in explaining why I am the way I am.

Felix would do things like take off his tail and use it as a cane or a hook, or take off his ears and use them as scissors — or SHears, as he would point out. He had a magic bag of tricks, a carpetbag that could contain anything he happened to need at the moment.

When #4 daughter was young, a new set of Felix cartoons came out, just as surreal as the original ones. She and I watched these new ones together, which may go a long way in explaining why she is the way she is. We’ll never forget the one about Felix trying to take his girlfriend, Sheba Beebopareebop, out for her birthday. They somehow wound up running through the New York Giants’ changing room, and Sheba says, “The New York Giants all naked and stuff…. Man, what a great birthday!” Saturday morning children’s programming has changed a lot since my youth. But Felix is the same.

A WRITING PROMPT FOR YOU: What’s the first entertainment you remember being actually entertained by?

I was born in Louisville, Kentucky, but now live in the woods in southern Indiana. Though I only write fiction, I love to read non-fiction. The more I learn about this world, the more fantastic I see it is.
