Bartleby Bartleby Bartleby Bartleby #FridayRecommends

Do you love “Bartleby the Scrivener” by Herman Melville? What am I saying? Of course you do! If you haven’t read it, you can read it online or download it in multiple formats — FOR FREE — at Project Gutenberg. Or, if you prefer, you can go to Great Books Online, which is a fabulous source, anyway.

So read the story, and then go read this take-off by Jay at Bibliophilopolis. You’re welcome.

I live in fear that I’ll read an announcement that “Bartleby the Scrivener” is being made into a musical by Tim Burton, starring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. The Amazing Sara Marian would probably go to see it, but I would prefer not to.

A WRITING PROMPT BASED ON MY POST: A character has to deal with a puzzlingly difficult employee.

I was born in Louisville, Kentucky, but now live in the woods in southern Indiana. Though I only write fiction, I love to read non-fiction. The more I learn about this world, the more fantastic I see it is.

I read Bartleby in junior year of high school. One day the teacher asked someone a question that he couldn’t answer, so she turned to me. “John, can you answer the question?” My answer, naturally, was “I prefer not to.”

She laughed, muttered “smartass” under her breath, and called on someone else. I got that a lot…
