Today is food day on the old blogaroo, so Imma post a kind of recipe.
My mother is in the hospital with pneumonia (much better, thank you, and all the better for your asking), and I was going to eat supper with her there yesterday, so I made supper for lunch so Charlie could have a home-cooked meal instead of his usual makeshift of Cheerios. We had fried green tomatoes (the queen of foods) and a big ol’ salad.
BIG OL’ SALAD
- lettuce
- carrots
- celery
- portobello mushrooms
- raisins
- SHARP white cheddar cheese
- toasted almond slivers
We dressed it with Hing. In case you don’t know it, Hing is Ranch Dressing. When our big girls were little girls, the only dressing in the house was Ranch Dressing. One of them misunderstood “Pass the dressing” as “Pass the Hing,” and Ranch Dressing has been Hing ever since. We make it from the packet. Today, I had homemade mayonnaise with which to make it, and it was extra-special good. 🙂

p.s. When I was little, my Mom told me red cabbage was orchids. “Somebody climbed up in a tree and risked breaking his neck, just so you could have some of those beautiful flowers in your salad.” It worked, too–I ate ’em and appreciated ’em.
