With all that’s going on in the world today, it’s nice to live in a small town where people have their priorities straight.
Bread. Stale bread. How much is a person, a people, a society expected to endure, eh? Some brave soul broke the code of silence and called the anonymous call-in line at our local weekly newspaper. I think Anonymous Caller speaks for us all.

This is in response to
the person that called in
and couldn’t buy a loaf
of fresh bread.
I’ve been going through
the same thing
for three years.
I thought it was just me,
then I found out
it was not.
I’ve went to this store and that store,
tried that brand and this brand,
it’s always dried out,
like it’s been out for three days.
I too would like to know
what’s going on
with the
bread situation.

My dear late sainted Grandpa used to say, “Half a loaf is better than not loafing at all,” but that hardly seems to apply here, does it? Sorry, Anonymous Caller. All I can suggest is that you take time out from prowling the bread shelves and learn to bake your own. It ain’t that hard.
I’m posting today at Fatal Foodies on the topic of food in heraldry.
A WRITING PROMPT FOR YOU: Write about bread.

October 10, 2017 at 7:05amMy grandfather used to say “it’s the best thing since sliced bread” or was that “bottled beer” – but neither are good stale.

October 10, 2017 at 3:17pmI can’t say I’ve ever eaten stale bread in my life, or if I have, I can’t tell? Like even some old, dried out pumpernickel is still good with some butter…
I bake about 50 loaves a year, buy plenty of Bunny, sourdough, nine grain, or baguettes, never encountered this.
Is this a real problem for people?
What is stale bread?

October 10, 2017 at 5:51pmStale bread is old, dried out bread. Anybody who can’t find a good use for it just isn’t thinking hard enough, amIright? Hello, bread pudding?

October 10, 2017 at 5:16pmPeople just LOVE to complain about something. Anything will do. But to write a letter to the newspaper, which can do absolutely nothing about the bread or its expiration or use-by dates seems to take the cake. Bread. Whatever.

October 10, 2017 at 5:53pmThat’s the problem: This is a call-in line, so people don’t even have to take the time and trouble to frame and pen a letter; they just dial the phone and spout off. I shop at Jay C. If their bread was any fresher, it would still be raw dough.
