Godmother of the Civil Rights Movement #MondayRecommends and #Nails

If you don’t know who Billie Holiday was, or if you think she was just a jazz and blues singer, or if you know exactly who she was and what she contributed to the good of the world, I have great news for you.

Hulu (which I don’t have) just aired The United States vs. Billie Holiday.

While white entertainers were getting sympathy and treatment for their addictions, Billie Holiday was targeted and punished. It was partly because she was black. It was mostly because of a song she sang, a song she persisted in singing, despite being warned not to.

Here’s a website dedicated to her. The song , Strange Fruit, and its lyrics are there.

If you subscribe to Hulu, I envy you. I will most certainly see the film as soon as can. She’s been one of my heroes for decades.

My nails this week are fluid art:

A WRITING PROMPT FROM ME TO YOU: Who is your hero?

About

I was born in Louisville, Kentucky, but now live in the woods in southern Indiana. Though I only write fiction, I love to read non-fiction. The more I learn about this world, the more fantastic I see it is.

Billie Holiday will be watched. Strange Fruit is sadly lyrically haunting and powerful so I generally skip it just like Tori Amos’s Me and a Gun. Too heavy for joeys.
