My Deal Me In deck turned up diamonds again this week, which means fairy tales. I’m still behind in reading the fairy tales Pook Press sends me fortnightly, so I read one of those.
What Came of Picking Flowers
Pook Press tells us this is a Portuguese fairy tale. In a way, it’s just the kind of story I like; in another way, not.
I like fairy tales with lots of bits in them. First, three sisters go missing after picking flowers, but that’s just the set-up. The brother gets hold of some enchanted items (steals them, actually, which isn’t very admirable). Then this leads to that adventure and that leads to another adventure. I like that.
What I don’t like, is that all the girls do is weep and wait to be rescued. I mean, last week’s fairy tale had the brothers sitting around moaning that if only their sister would come, they would be delivered, so turn about is fair enough. But still. That’s all I’m sayin’.
Another plus is the inclusion of Arthur Rackham’s illustrations.
Another minus is that the freakin’ flowers had absolutely nothing to do with anything.
