The Dessert that Never Was

So, yeah, the dessert IS, but if you make a dessert for a party and then don’t go to the party, is the dessert really really real?

Whatever.

We were going to go to a 4th of July party, but I needed to be home to transfer books to a partner for the event we were going to, leaving the next day, and I had to pack and print stuff out and blah blah blah, so we didn’t go.

But this is the dessert I invented and made:

Patriotic Jello Salad

  • 1 3oz box of cherry Jello
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 20oz can cherry pie filling
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 8oz bar of cream cheese, softened
  • about 2 Tbs milk
  • about 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • non-dairy whipped topping
  • fresh cherries and blueberries
  • walnuts

Dissolve the Jello in the hot water and stir in the pie filling and chopped nuts. Pour into a square dish and refrigerate until solid.

Mix the cream cheese, milk, and mayonnaise. You can use more or less mayonnaise, or substitute sour cream, or add sugar if you want a super sweet dessert. Add some blueberries and mash ’em good. When the Jello solidifies, spread this cream cheese stuff on and refrigerate again.

Top the cold cream cheese layer with the whipped topping, and garnish with blueberries, pitted cherry halves, and walnuts.

It would probably be good with strawberry Jello and strawberry pie filling, but cherry and cherries are what I had.

I’m posting today at Fatal Foodies about multicultural stuffed peppers.

I honestly don’t remember the last time I had any sort of Jello-based dessert. For some reason, it just isn’t something we have. This looks pretty good.

They were all the rage in the 50s, and became bourgeois in the 60s. I always loved ’em, and beelined to them at church covered-dish (pitch-in) dinners. Charlie loves them, too, so we’re both happy. 🙂

I love this! It’s like a more tasty spin on pretzel salad. I love jello. And cherries. You can bring it to MY party! 😀

It’s funny that you say that about the pretzel salad, because I found myself wanting that pretzel salty bite. I think the pretzel base would have made this even better. Charlie didn’t like it, because he just wanted the Jello and cherries, without the cream cheese/mayo layer. And you know what I told him.

I was thinking, as I made it, that it wasn’t kosher, because it mixed gelatin and cream cheese. Am I right?

Talk about a crowd-pleaser! Even if your kids don’t love jello, they’ll go nuts over these. So will the adults, for that matter!

The blueberries, pitted cherry halves, and walnut will make a mouth-watering dessert that will satisfy dessert-eaters of every age! Nice combination. Will try to make one for my family. Thanks for sharing Marian!
