Here’s another story about That Boss.
First, I must tell you that there were two secretaries and four bosses, which sometimes led to conflicts as to who needed what soonest.
I must also tell you that That Boss required a pitcher of ice water and four glasses on a tray in his office every morning, ready and waiting when he came in.
So, one morning, one of the other bosses gave me something to do the instant I came in and said it was most urgent. Since the other secretary was on vacation, I sat down and got to work.
That Boss came in and went into his office. Then he came out and said, “When did the plumbers say they would have the sink in the kitchenette fixed?”
I was like, “What plumbers?”
He said, “I know the sink must be broken, or there would be ice water in my office. So when will the plumbers have it fixed?”
And I said:
By a strange coincidence, they said they would have it fixed by the time I’m finished doing this work for Mr. Y.
Since I generally had his goddamn ice water there for him, he let that one slide.

I will say that, when one of the field bosses tossed his jacket on my desk and told me to sew the button on, I dumped it in his lap and said, “That’s not my job. If you want me to do it as a favor, ask me, and I’ll be glad to do it for you.” We got along great after that.
