Not really. I mean, I guess some probably do sometimes, but not in this instance. I just …
ANYWAY, I just read THE KAMOGAWA FOOD DETECTIVES by Hisashi Kashiwai for the Supper Book Club, which is part of the Stir the Pot subscription.
In this book, clients who can find the word-of-mouth Kamogawa Diner can also find the Kamogawa Detective Agency, which finds nothing except a dish the client wants to eat again but can’t find: something they ate once on a special date, something their late mother made when they were a child, something they ate on a half-forgotten outing with a grandfather.
The client gives whatever details (usually vague) they can remember about the dish, occasion, or place, and the father-and-daughter team (she teases out the details, he does the legwork) find and recreate the dish, which often leads to a resolution of the situation or emotions that are part of the memory.
I’m not familiar with Japanese food, so pickled eel and bitter vegetables don’t appeal to me, but if you enjoy that cuisine, there are loving descriptions of dishes that would probably make your mouth water. Me, I was surprised that spaghetti is popular in Japan. Maybe it’s like instant ramen here in America.
Anyway, I recommend the book, even though they won’t let the cat into the restaurant.
I was feeling the purple this week, so I have simple purple plaid nails.
A WRITING PROMPT FROM ME TO YOU: Is there a dish you remember that you’ve never had exactly again but would love to?

October 9, 2024 at 5:36pmIt sounds like and interesting book. Now I’m stuck trying to think of a meal I can’t remember. I do like the nails this week.
