Food Tuesday: Truth In Tteok

#FoodTuesday #writingprompt

#4 Daughter and I have obsessed over the one-season KOREAN ODYSSEY, a modern-day take on JOURNEY TO THE WEST (I’m looking at you, Sun Wukong). In it, a dish called tteokbokki is often eaten as comfort food.

So, when Sara found some at the grocery, naturally she bought me some!

You see that picture of the chicken on the lid? See how the chicken is crying? A truer picture was never painted. See where the text says “Spicy” with a capital S? So true. Oh, so true.

I added some leftover chicken to mine, and it looked like this:

With tears streaming from my eyes and one hand pressing a wad of tissues to my flowing nose, I texted Sara in a cry for help. It was burning me alive, but I couldn’t stop eating it. She suggested adding some coconut milk. I added some dairy-free other kind of milk, and it did tone it down a bit. I finished it, leaving nothing but a bit of sauce.

Somebody else decided to taste test it. I didn’t stop her, because it never occurred to me I would need to guard that sauce from anybody, let alone a picky cat.

Her review? She licked her chops. I think she liked it. I didn’t let her eat it, though, because spicy isn’t good for cats.

I have friends and relations who would laugh at me for thinking this was spicy, but great jumping Jehoshaphat, it was hot to me!
