Food Tuesday: Crack

#FoodTuesday #candy #vegetarian #vegan #writingprompt

This candy is well named. It’s seriously addictive. Sadly, it’s super easy to make, so it’s tempting to have some around all the time, but I was raised Lutheran, and that’s too much indulgence for me.

CRACK

  • saltine (soda) crackers, about one long sleeve
  • butter or margarine
  • brown sugar
  • chocolate chips
  • chopped nuts

I use semi-sweet chocolate chips and pecans, but you do you.

Preheat the over to 350F (~177C)

Line a rimmed sheet pan with foil. Cover it with whole crackers, as completely as you can. I usually have to break a few roughly in half to complete the coverage.

Put one and a half sticks of margarine or butter and one cup of brown sugar into a pot. Bring it to a boil and boil it, stirring constantly, for about three minutes: It will look foamy when it’s done.

Pour that hot liquid over the crackers and use a knife or spatula or some damn thing to spread it out over the crackers. Put the pan into the over for about 10 minutes.

Take the pan out and sprinkle it with nuts and chocolate chips. Put it back into the over and turn the heat off.

After about 10 minutes, take the pan out and gently spread the chips and nuts out as evenly as possible.

Cool it down, then refrigerate it for as long as you can stand and break it up into pieces.

O. MG. Please, for the love of all that’s holy, do yourself a favor and give some away. Your worst enemy would pray for your soul if you gave them some of this.

That does look delicious. And the ingredients seem healthy enough (I have a loose scale).

It must be a million calories a square inch, but worth every one. Seriously, they call it Crack for a reason!
