My friend Beth Johnson gave me a Kindle copy of the first book in her favorite series, Midlife in Gretna Green: Midlife Recorder Book 1. I finished it and subscribed to the author’s newsletter so I could get bonus material and bought Book 2. As the title suggests, the protagonist is in her forties, a widow. She’s unsure of who she is or if she has any value, the victim of a bullying boss and a controlling husband. The husband has died, and now her grandmother has died, and she has to go to Gretna Green to wind up the grandmother’s affairs. Except that’s not what happens. Magic happens. I mean, literally. Magic. Very magic. The prose is delightful, the characters are well-drawn and varied, the protagonist’s growth arc is believably uneven, the humor hits the spot …. As I said, I paid cash money for the sequel.
Highly recommended.
My nails this week are a fail. I tried to do a mosaic kind of effect that looked AWESOME in the inspo pic but came out pale and wan and streaky. I like the other nails, though, a gradient of shiny coffee brown and sparkly darker brown. The stamp is with Gingersnap, and it totally doesn’t show up at all on the light nail. Oh, well.

A WRITING PROMPT FROM ME TO YOU: A disappointing attempt
