Not the kind you play. Not the kind you play with, either, unless you think you have a plethora of fingers.
I decided I needed a new mandoline slicer, one with a setting that let me slice veggies paper-thin. So I researched, paled at the prices, and found this one, a new VonShef, on eBay for a price I was willing to pay. And I sliced a potato.
BEFORE
Yeah, that’s one potato, and not a big one, either! The slotty thing is a microwave potato chip maker I got from some damn place or other.
I tossed the potato slices with olive oil and salt, painted the slotty thing and the plate it’s on with olive oil, slotted in the potato slices, and microwaved ’em for 5 minutes, stopping every minute to check so they wouldn’t burn.
And here’s a sample of what I got:
AFTER
It actually works better to just drape the slices over the slotty thing instead of slotting them in, then cooking them for 3 minutes. The slices are so thin, they tend to slither down through the slots and stick to the plate.
Oh, my, they’re good, though! I haven’t ‘sperimented yet with sweet potatoes or other veg yet, but I’ll bet they’ll be yummy, too.
Money well spent!
It’s the first of the month, so be sure to check out this month’s Hot Flash.
A WRITING PROMPT FOR YOU: Your character buys something someone else considers frivolous, but which turns out to be money well spent.

February 1, 2017 at 11:53amI have a friend that swears by his mandolin. We have one, but we don’t use it much because of the “one more thing” thing.

February 1, 2017 at 12:15pmIn the summer, we eat a lot of sliced and breaded and fried summer squash, and fried green tomatoes. Charlie likes ’em kind of thinnish, and I have trouble slicing them that thin, even with a sharp knife. A mandoline is perfect for that. Oh, this one cleans up very easily and quickly, too.

February 2, 2017 at 8:45amUm … because you’re so selfless and good that you buy things for other people and never for yourself. Don’t you have an anniversary or a birthday or a Mother’s Day or something coming up? Hmmm???

February 2, 2017 at 9:30amYes, that must surely be it. I think for being so selfless and good, I owe it to myself to buy a mandoline slicer, perhaps for Lincoln’s birthday. Now what shall I cook to honor myself? I mean, him?
