I step through the wooden door
of my trapezoid-shaped home
built of sturdy wood. It rises
thirty feet above the summer
grass. I secure the north and west
shutters before climbing the narrow
stairs to my old-fashioned widow’s
walk. A window-filled cupola caps
the red roof, allowing me to see
in every direction. Prior to dusk
settling in, I hang and light six
lanterns to shine across the fields.
I pretend it sits atop a hill. I pace,
stopping to stare into darkness,
as if overlooking a secluded bay,
keeping watch for incoming ships.
Yes, this is a childhood whim. It’s
my dream…living in a lighthouse.
My wish of listening to the sea,
inhaling the smell of salt water.
I want to hear the sea as it ebbs
and flows as I dream of faraway
destinations and adventures.
