Puffin #ThrowbackThursday

My husband showed me a picture of a puffin yesterday, and OF COURSE I had to recite There Once Was A Puffin in its entirety. It was one of 85 “Childhood Favorites” in my Big Golden Book, THE GOLDEN BOOK OF POETRY (1949 edition).

There Once Was A Puffin

PuffinI memorized that poem when I was very small, which means I’m stuck with it for life. I could be stuck with worse, am I right?

A WRITING PROMPT FOR YOU: What did your main character memorize when they were quite small, which comes back as naturally as breathing no matter how old they get?

Here I am, still hoping I’ll be able to recall my name in a few years.

Girl, your knack for remembering lyrics and now, I see, poetry, is amazing.

Since I am mostly into FORGETTING bunches of the past just so I won’t stay grumpy and depressed ALL the time… Well, I’m purely jealous. There.

I try to remember only the fun stuff. Like the time we made I Ching wands out of painted cardboard and taped them to our dorm room door and pretended it was the passage to the infinite. And the time the boys came to our window plotting a panty raid and you said, “You open the window, and I’ll club them with this broomstick as they come in,” and they all ran away.

I must’ve had a bigger stick than they did.
