Vegan Shawarma, #Vegan With Pizazz!

First, it’s the first of the month, so there’s a new micro-mini story on my Hot Flashes page. This is the last one. I’ve been doing one a month for quite a few years, now, and I’m out of juice. Maybe I’ll pick it up again at a future date.

#2 Daughter and I were talking about shawarma. I’ve never had it, because I always order something else when I go to a Mediterranean restaurant, but she said she loves it. I thought it was a dish, but she told me it’s a spice mix.

She had given me a small stainless steel container she got from a kitchen shop, thinking it was probably useful somehow, so I decided to mix up some shawarma spice mix and store it in that.

I found this recipe on Veena Azmanov’s site. I don’t know why her blend is red and mine is black. I made mine according to her recipe, except I went light on the ginger, since #2 Daughter doesn’t care for heavy ginger.

Okay, so I cut up a sweet potato, 8 ounces of portobello mushrooms, a sweet onion, carrots, and celery. Tossed that with olive oil, salt, and a tablespoon or so of shawarma spice mix. Roasted it at 425F for about an hour, stirring occasionally so the veg cooks evenly.

Looks like this:

If you want chicken, put some dark meat of chicken in with the veg. If you like white meat, put that in for the last 15 minutes or so or it’ll dry out. But the veg is so delicious….

I LOVE chicken Shawarma. We have to travel a little to get Mediterranean food now. I’ll check out the recipe, but your veggies look yummy to me!

They were SO good! I might try the spice mix on meat sometime, but it sure punched up the veg!

I wish the red hot sauce we get with the Shawarma was sold in stores. We love it! I like a spice kick, He-Man loves his spice the hotter the better. 😀

Me too! The sauce that they have at our favorite Mediterranean place in Cupertino, CA is completely different in taste, but looks the same as Siracha.

Sorry- Schwara IS a dish. One I love. It’s similar to a gyro (I’ve been told- but since gyro are not kosher, I can’t verify.)

Sorry — Shawarma is a spice mix. You can have veg shawarma, chicken shawarma, or fill-in-the-blank shawarma, meaning various things seasoned with shawarma spice mix.

That looks delicious! But it’s a shawarma-spiced chicken or something wrapped in a pita. Imma make that sometime!
