The delightful Teagan Geneviene has done it again! Her latest addition to her Author Tool Chest collection is REAL STEAMPUNKERY TECH: TRUE CONTRAPTIONS OF THE STEAM AND DIESEL ERAS. For her purpose, she defines this stretch of time as being from 1770 – ~1950.

There are contraptions, conceptions, and inventors, and includes a section on “Forgotten Women Inventors”.

  • The London Underground (subway) opened in 1863.
  • Mustache cups, cups with guards on them to keep one’s mustache dry, were invented in the 1800’s.
  • Margaret Wilcox patented a heater that used heat from the engine to warm the interior of a vehicle in 1893. It was initially used in trains; she had to wait for Henry Ford to invent the automobile for it to be a popular feature in cars.

Now I know where to look if I need to know if a character in 1897 could have worn blue jeans (yes) or a zipper (also yes).

My nails this week are fall-themed again.

Thanks very much Liz. I’m delighted you watched the trailer too. You probably mean Nikola Tesla. Brilliant, kinda weird, and quite a looker. Hugs.

Neat to see a sampling of the steampunkery goodness in Teagan’s new book. I didn’t realize the London Underground was that old!

It’s amazing to learn when things were patented, and how much longer ago than that they were thought up!

Although I was in the technology part of the agency, I retired from the US Patent and Trademark Office. A lot of work, research, proving proof, evaluating, meetings with examiners and judges (as in court case real judges) is involved in getting a patent. The examiners uncover issues, and large parts of the process have to be restarted. Having a lawyer is not required, but it’s all so convoluted that very few people manage to get one without an attorney. Plus drawings are required, so many applicants have to also hire that out. Both of which add to the fees. And then the fees themselves are complicated.
Getting a patent is an expensive nightmare. It really seems like the entire process needs to be overhauled…

I didn’t realize there was so much involved in getting a patent. I wonder if it was simpler way back when, or if it was always a bear.

You know… I’m not sure. The agency didn’t tend to admit to any flaws… (eye roll) Seriously though, I imagine it was still pretty complicated, because I know they still had to provide drawings of the thing (or process — those can be patented too).

You are so kind, Olga — thank you. I’m trying hard to get back on schedule with writing/publishing after the month KDP cost me with this one. I hope to follow it with “Speak Flowers and Fans” sometime in December. Hugs from the Scoobies and me.

Dear Marian, you gem! I’m delighted that you enjoyed “Real Steampunkery Tech.” You’ve made my week. I’ll be back to share and reblog after I’ve fed the Scoobies their breakfast.
Meanwhile, here’s something from the letter “M” for Marian:
Monowheel motorcycle. Also known as the one-wheeled motorcycle, or gas-powered unicycle. Invented in 1931 by Italian, M. Goventosa de Udine, is a vehicle with a large wheel that has a motor and a chassis to hold the rider, seat, and steering. Early versions were powered by a variety of motors, including gas, electric, and pedal-powered, and some could reach speeds of up to 93 miles per hour.

Oh and your prompt, I’m glad it was your cup of “tea.” πŸ˜€ Big hugs.
