Sometimes I want a grilled cheese that’s so buttery it oozes, but sometimes I want it crunchy and less artery-threatening. On the latter occasions, I haul out my indoor grill.

This is, as my grandpa used to say, a handy little gadget. It’s non-stick, and has ridges in it that give those grill marks the chefs are so nuts about, with a channel that runs into a grease-catcher you can pull out and wash. One drawback: the grease-catcher isn’t attached like AT ALL, so the problem isn’t pulling it out, it’s keeping it in. Just don’t move the grill while it’s dripping grease/oil.
ANYWAY, I got this package of cheese at the grocery this week.

For when you want lots of different cheeses but not whole packs of them.
So I slapped a couple of strips between two slices of Nutty Oat Bread and grilled it with no butter or oil in my indoor grill.

It was, as Sara says, cronchy. Very nice.
A WRITING PROMPT FROM ME TO YOU: Same dish two ways.

June 23, 2026 at 7:19pmI love a grilled cheese sandwich. Almost any way you can make it, I’ll eat it. Even better if there’s some tomato soup to dip it in.

June 24, 2026 at 8:47amYeah, that’s classic! In the summer, I make my own tomato soup with fresh tomatoes. Mmmmm….

June 23, 2026 at 7:51amMarian, I love crunchy, grilled sammiches. I’ve always just kept them in the pan until toasted. I also love Private Selection and other brands’ pre-cut cheeses. I’ve never seen the variety pack in my store; but I like them because I can’t cut through those blocks without hurting my wrists (repetitive strain.)
Your picture makes me want to have a grilled cheese sandwich. I never tried one without butter. That’s just a toasted sheese sandwich, where I come from. LOL
Cheers,
Mitch

June 23, 2026 at 10:06amLooks delish, M.A. For your friend Mitch, if you want that grease look and not the butter, I will spray my pan with a little Pam, and it makes a good grilled minus those extra calories and fat.
I had one of those little grills, gave it away, no space in this tiny kitchen after moving. Drats!!

June 23, 2026 at 3:40pmButter is always an option, I just like it dry sometimes. One of my many weirdnesses. 😀
