Slumming? Really? Is this a slum? Oh, you’re joking with me, aren’t you? So amusing!
I wasn’t born a countess, you know. I married the count — oh, many years ago. He had a title and excellent birth, but no money. I had money and excellent birth, but there were not titles in my family. We each had land, though not much. Land counts for relatively little, these days.
Alas, the count spent my money, then spent a bullet escaping our creditors, leaving me to sell our houses and land, most of our art, and much of my jewelry. Fortunately, we had made many friends, such as Marcus Vadny and Hannah Hobbs. I am not forgotten.
Such fun, we have! Life is a party! One, endless, bright, sparkling party! Endless!

For today’s A-to-Z hop-over, go take a look at PammyPam’s Unconventional Librarian blog. It’s loverly.
Countess Rula Urka is a blessedly minor character in SIDESHOW IN THE CENTER RING, my science fiction comedy of bad manners, available through Indiebound and at Amazon in print and for Kindle and Kindle free apps.
A WRITING PROMPT FOR YOU: Write a character who thinks the height of happiness is being in a mess of loud, drunken people behaving badly.

April 25, 2015 at 8:55amI wondered that, too, Betty — that’s where the book began for me. I saw a picture of some of these “Beautiful People” and their households, and I wondered what that life might be like, once you scratched the surface. 🙂
