Mighty Hunter and a Bit of Food

Did you know I caught a mouse last night? Well, Mom’s cat Ozzie and I tag-teamed him. I was at Mom’s, and we were watching a tape of Castle, and suddenly the cats were skittering all over the house after a mouse. We opened the basement door and the outside door, hoping he would make a break for it, but the cats kept him herded inside. Sweetie Pie got him, and had him in her mouth but, when I picked her up to take her outside to make her release him there, she released him IN THE HOUSE AGAIN.

So I decided to take matters into my own hands. I got a cottage cheese tub (empty) and a bit of cardboard and went to the room where the mouse was currently dodging Ozzie. Sweetie Pie, disgusted that I wouldn’t let her keep him if she caught him, had quit the chase. So Ozzie cornered him and I clapped the tub over him and slipped the cardboard under it and carried him outside and released him. He seemed pretty glad to go.

And that’s that story.

Did you know that I make quesadillas in my waffle iron? Well, I do. I have one of these round ones. I used to make waffles fairly often, but Charlie objected to my round waffle makerbuying (see what I did there, Mom? I remembered to use the possessive with a gerund.) –Where was I? Oh, yes: Charlie objected to my buying genuine maple syrup because he says it’s too expensive, so I bought some corn syrup with brown coloring in it and I can’t bear to insult my waffles with it so I don’t have waffles or pancakes any more, though they’re pretty good with jam on them.

Anyway, I heat up the machine while I build the quesadilla. Last night, we had flour tortillas, leftover roasted vegetables, fresh mozzarella and a bit of mayonnaise with dill pickles cut up in it. Pizazz! Put another flour tortilla on top, put it in the waffle press, and…press. I turned it around once so it would heat evenly. Most tasty.

WRITING PROMPT: The Johnny Depp character in Benny and Joon made mashed potatoes and grilled cheese sandwiches with implements not usually used for cooking. When I was in college, I cooked many a meal over the heating element of a popcorn popper, the only cooking implement allowed in the dorm rooms back in the day. Your prompt today is to come up with a way to make a dish using something–kitchen-related or not–not usually used to prepare that dish.

MA
p.s. While you’re at it, watch this video from Benny and Joon. You’re welcome.

You saved a mouse and angered the cats…I would have let the cat have the mouse and put them both outside.

I plugged in the iron…no, not that iron, the one that makes my curly mop straight. It took only a short time to heat up. While I waited, I layered American cheese between two slices of cracked wheat, chopped an onion oh so fine and added sweet pickle relish. Then I cut the bread into strips to match the size of my iron.

The scent was preferable to burnt hair as the cheese sizzled, the bread browned and the onions grew soft. My three small children jumped around my legs, they couldn’t wait. They so loved their grilled cheese sandwiches and I saved a ton not going to the hotel restaurant.

Seems I’ll need a new curling iron when I get home.

I tried to put the cat holding the mouse outside, but she dropped the mouse when I tried to pick her up! Hmph!

You (or your character) made grilled cheese with a curling iron? One of those with the flat bits, then, for straightening hair, rather than the round kind that make curls that last until you need them and then the curls all fall out?

      Coolio!

From mouse to cooking, quite a change of subject. I like your waffle making machine. Very futuristic. I can envisage a science fiction plot bunny from there.

Real maple syrup is worth the money and the calories.

True! I’m on strike until I remember to buy more real syrup. If fake syrup is good enough for him, HE can eat it, and I’ll use the real deal. lol!
