When Your Food Looks Nothing Like the Recipe Picture #1LinerWeds

So #4 Daughter, the amazing Sara Marian, and I were talking about cooking the other day. She was lamenting that her cakes (box mix, just like her mother makes) never look perfect like other people’s cakes. I was suggesting fixes and she was ticking off how she had tried each and how they had failed her.

There was a couple of seconds’ pause, then we each quoted my late grandpa in perfect instant unison:

That don’t hurt the eatin’ of it.

Thanks, grandpa, for dropping by and giving us a major laugh.

I love that expression. I’ve heard it before.

My grandmother made everything from scratch. She was a very good cook, but she had her bad days. She made a cake one time that looked good on top, but she had left it in the oven too long. She cut me a corner piece and said, “it’s only burnt on three sides.” It was good.

It all looks the same on the inside. If it tastes good, who cares what it looks like? OK, unless you’re in the Pillsbury Bake-Off… (Is that even a thing anymore?)

Did you ever make your sister a cheesecake? Was it so firm and solid that she considered using it as a tire on a farm trailer? Did it bounce? Did the dog refuse to go near it? Did…. Well, maybe I have said enough!

Most of my cooking IS edible. Just close your eyes. That’s it. Now, Hold your breath, good…. Look out Stomach! Here it comes!

A certain spy has been know to use my cupcakes as weapons… (They fly, hit, hurt, and self destruct…) But, I do make good French Toast and pancakes. As evidenced by my waistline. (And yes, feel free to storify.)

I don’t have a sister. But if I DID have a sister, whether I made her a fatal cheesecake or not would depend entirely on the sort of sister she turned out to be. Maybe the sister with the inedible cheesecake had it comin’.

No. I love her. I must shamefully confess, it was a birthday cake. And, well, the garbage can said “THUMP!” when it went in. I am SURE it tasted good to the can!

Well, at least, we all had a good laugh at my efforts. If we had only had a catapult!

NO one, except the can, was brave enough to eat of it. And the dog, who was on a “see food” diet, would not even lick it.

Sigh. So no one can do as bad as me.

That’s not spam! That’s a NON edible cake! RUN!

I’m not picky when it comes to cake. If it tastes good, I don’t care what it looks like. Your daughter can bake me a cake any time. 😉

You wrote the story of my life when it comes to cooking and bakin. Nothing evah looks like the picture. NOTHING! Once in a blue moon after I’ve tried the recipe to the letter first; then I tweak it my way adding this and that it has looked better, but never, evah the same as the original. I first experienced that disappointment and shame in 7th grade mandatory cooking class. I’ve thanked God everyday since for that teacher. She was amazing. I wish I could remember her name. I just remember how she looked one particular day… in her multi colored brown paisley mini dress, dangling ear-rings, short hair…not in vogue then, and she had a cop for a boy-friend. She talked about him…a bit. It was the day of the final big feast. She was so amazing.
Since then when my eggs, tortillas, pizza crust rounds, cakes, pies, scones, stews, steaks…whatever doesn’t come out looking like the image in the recipe book I say something very, very similar to what your Grandfather said. She told us, ” don’t worry about what it looks like. Taste it! Is it good? Yes. That’s all that matters! Eat up, and enjoy!” I wish I could remember her name!

For the record. I had her for sewing the next semester…she wasn’t amazing. I failed the class with a D. I just didn’t get it… I still to this day struggle with sewing. It’s so hard! Those that can sew you are truly gifted!
