Food Tuesday: 5, Yuck – 75, Yum

#FoodTuesday #writingprompt

From the Department of Things I Loathed When I Was Young But Love Now, ladies and gentlemen and those who identify however they damn well want to identify, I bring you: Stewed Tomatoes.

Looks a bit yucky, because I forgot to take picture of it when it was fresh, and the bread has broken down. Still tasted like heaven, though.

Now, if you don’t know stewed tomatoes, that’s sliced or cubed tomatoes, onion, green peppers, salt and pepper and garlic and herbs of your choosing. Cook it until the peppers are as soft as you like them. Then add small cubes of stale bread or, if you don’t have stale bread, of toast. The bread soaks up the juice.

Sometimes people add a pinch of sugar, but others don’t. Some (including me) add a bit of butter.

This was one of the down-home country dishes that Charlie didn’t like, so we only had it when the craving was strong on me.

I made this particular mess with canned stewed tomatoes, because tomatoes aren’t in at the farmers’ markets yet. It was really really really really really good.

This reminds me of a meal my paternal grandmother served during Lent. Same ingredients, similarly prepared but served over rice. And, because she had a devilish nature, she tossed in a few chic peas. It was very good, except for that last item.

Oooo, that sounds Good! How did she cook her chickpeas? I like to either toast them in a pan or in the oven, or pressure cook them until they’re creamy soft.
